The highest-paying YouTube niches, and why advertisers pay more for them
Two channels with identical views can earn several times different amounts. The reason is who wants to advertise to their viewers. Here is how that works, and how to use it.

Ask two YouTubers with a million monthly views what they earn and the answers can differ several-fold. One might make a few thousand dollars a month from ads; the other several times that. Most of the difference comes down to one question: who wants to advertise to their viewers, and how much are they willing to pay? This guide explains how that works and what you can do with it, whatever your niche.
Where ad prices come from
YouTube sells ad space through Google's advertising system, where advertisers compete in auctions. Google's own explanation of Ad Rank describes a bid as one of several factors that decide which ad wins, alongside the quality of the ad; it also notes that advertisers who want more certainty of winning may pay more. The more advertisers there are competing to reach a particular viewer, and the more each can afford to bid, the higher the price.
That price shows up in YouTube Studio as CPM, which YouTube defines as how much advertisers spend per 1,000 ad impressions before YouTube's share. What you actually earn is your RPM, revenue per 1,000 views after YouTube's share and counting views that showed no ad. On long-form videos, creators receive 55% of net watch-page ad revenue.
YouTube's revenue analytics page names several things that move CPM, including the time of year, because advertisers bid higher or lower by season, and location, because different countries have different levels of competition in the ad market.
Why some niches are worth more
An advertiser's maximum bid depends on what a new customer is worth to them. A brokerage, a credit card issuer or a business-software company can earn hundreds or thousands of dollars over the lifetime of one customer, so they can afford to pay a great deal to put an ad in front of a viewer who is actively thinking about money or work. A brand selling a low-priced snack or a mobile game earns far less per customer and bids accordingly.
A channel's niche signals what its viewers are thinking about. Someone watching a video comparing retirement accounts is a valuable prospect for financial advertisers; someone watching a comedy sketch could be anyone. That is why the same viewer can be worth different amounts depending on what they are watching.
Estimated RPM by niche
These are the ranges our ad revenue calculator uses for long-form videos of 8 minutes or more with a mostly US, UK, Canadian or Australian audience. They are DigitalKari's planning estimates, built from a base RPM range and a niche multiplier, not figures published by YouTube.
| Niche | Multiplier | Long-form RPM | Shorts RPM |
|---|---|---|---|
| Personal finance & investing | 2.4× | $12.00–$26.40 | $0.11–$0.48 |
| Business & marketing | 1.7× | $8.50–$18.70 | $0.10–$0.42 |
| Tech & software | 1.5× | $7.50–$16.50 | $0.09–$0.40 |
| Education & how-to | 1.25× | $6.25–$13.75 | $0.09–$0.38 |
| Health & fitness | 1.2× | $6.00–$13.20 | $0.09–$0.37 |
| Travel & food | 1.0× | $5.00–$11.00 | $0.08–$0.35 |
| Lifestyle & vlogs | 0.95× | $4.75–$10.45 | $0.08–$0.34 |
| Beauty & fashion | 0.9× | $4.50–$9.90 | $0.08–$0.34 |
| Entertainment & comedy | 0.7× | $3.50–$7.70 | $0.07–$0.31 |
| Gaming | 0.6× | $3.00–$6.60 | $0.07–$0.29 |
Notice how much the niche gap shrinks for Shorts. Shorts ads run between videos in the feed and the revenue is pooled across creators and split by view share, so the topic of an individual Short has far less influence on what it earns. If you want your niche to pay, it has to be through long-form. See our Shorts vs long-form guide for the full comparison.
High-value topics inside "low-paying" niches
You don't have to switch niches to earn more per view. Advertisers bid on what a video is about and who watches it, so individual videos can attract much higher-value advertisers than the rest of the channel:
- Gaming: gaming PC builds, laptops, monitors and peripherals reviews attract hardware advertisers.
- Lifestyle: budgeting, saving for a home, renting vs buying and side-income videos attract finance advertisers.
- Beauty: skincare routines and product comparisons attract premium brands with bigger budgets.
- Travel: travel credit cards, insurance and booking comparisons attract finance and travel-booking advertisers.
- Entertainment: behind-the-scenes videos on running a creative business attract business and software tools.
The test is simple: would someone watching this video be close to a significant purchase? If so, advertisers will compete for them.
The hidden cap: advertiser-friendly guidelines
A high-value topic only pays if advertisers are willing to appear next to it. YouTube's advertiser-friendly content guidelines cover areas including inappropriate language, violence, adult content, shocking content, harmful acts, hateful content, drugs, firearms, controversial issues and sensitive events. Depending on context, a video can earn full ads, limited ads or none. In YouTube Studio, a yellow monetization icon means a video doesn't meet all of the guidelines, so many advertisers opt out of it.
Finance and health channels need particular care here, because sensational claims and shocking thumbnails are common in those niches and can trigger limited ads, which wipes out much of the niche's advantage. Keep titles, thumbnails and the first few seconds clean.
Choosing a niche you can sustain
RPM is only one half of income; the other half is views. A gaming channel with ten times the views of a finance channel can out-earn it despite a lower RPM. Before chasing a high-RPM niche, ask:
- Can I make 50+ videos on this? Consistency drives both views and Partner Program eligibility.
- Do I have real knowledge or access? Expertise shows, especially in finance and health, where viewers and advertisers are cautious.
- Can my videos naturally run 8 minutes or more? Mid-roll ad breaks are only available on monetized videos of 8 minutes or longer, which is where long-form RPM is earned.
- Is there sponsorship potential? High-RPM niches usually attract high sponsorship rates too, which often matter more than ad revenue.
Run your own scenarios in the ad revenue calculator by switching the niche at your real view count, and compare with a single sponsorship in the sponsored post rate calculator.
